Going Global

Another Friday means another entry for the blog. This week has been a HUGE week in the blogosphere. According to Google Analytics readers have been hitting the site from Coast to Coast*. I’m talking California to New York. Even Canadians are reading. Lots of traffic!

*Time to get real. There really have been hits on the blog in 6 non Kansas-Missouri states and in Canada. However, the average time spent on the blog from the states is 1.75 seconds. The guy from Canada stayed for a minute. Not great, but you gotta start somewhere! If we keep getting followers like this, we’ll be syndicated in no time.

Due to the increased readership the blog will try to touch on a global topic today:

My Barber/Hair Stylist the Communist.

Vladimir, moved to the US from Russia when I was about 7 or 8 (at least that’s when he opened his barbershop/salon). That would have been early 90’s, let’s say 1992. According to a reputable news source, the Cold War “ended” in 1991. Vlad didn’t waste much time jumping over to our side of the fence.

You would think that someone who lived under Soviet oppression for most of his life, seemingly embraced capitalism (owns his barbershop/salon), has a wife and family, and is a professional ping pong player (seriously) would have embraced the USA, thrown his hammer and sickle to the curb, and understand how great he has it in the greatest country in the world.

But then he says something like this, “I think home prices should stay the same indefinitely. No profit, no loss. When you sell your home, you get what you paid for it.”

I calmly explained that his “utopia” didn’t take into account inflation, market demand, was basically against all that is right in this world. He flatly said, “You’re wrong” and went on to explain how homes are not like the stock market and will not “always go up in value” (where have you been the last two years Vlad?!?) and how homes are for “living, not making profit”.

In other words, everyone should be able to afford a home, no question. Owning a home is a "Right".

Next thing you know he’ll say that healthcare is a “right” and that there should be no profit in that either ....

Blog Expectations

So I've been getting A LOT of feedback from readers wanting more of my writing, insight, humor, intelligence, etc. I completely understand that. I am quite fantastic and my blog is utterly entertaining.

However, I am going to try and get about one post up a week. Reasons for this include lack of time, lack of a fan base, and mostly lack of writing material and creativity.

Topics for blog will include Sports, Technology, Literature, and General Tomfoolery. Let me know if there is anything you want the blog to cover and of course TELL YOUR FRIENDS. The more blogowers the better!

Happy birthday Kordell Stewart!

Today is October 16, 2009. An important day for followers of the blog. Today is the birthday of former Colorado Buffalo and Pittsburgh Steelers QB Kordell Stewart. Happy birthday Kordell!

But seriously folks......October 16* is an important day for me, and therefore all followers of the blog. That is because one year from today, I will be marrying the lovely and talented Ms. Kelly Galloway.

*October 16th is also National Bosses Day (not a joke). If the Chiefs win a game soon I am considering changing the poll to "Who will be celebrating National Bosses Day in 2010? Kelly or Brian.

But we have a year to talk about wedding mumbo jumbo. Today is time to discuss the wonder that is "Falcon the Balloon Boy". I'm sure most followers of the blog are familiar with Falcon. He made news this week for NOT getting in a homemade hot air balloon and NOT falling out of it. Instead, Falcon went all Anne Frank on us and hid in his attic, while a manhunt was underway for him. I even heard he threw up when he was on national tv. Can you believe that?!?! What a loser!

Because of Falcon's inability to make news for anything newsworthy and by all accounts being a little wimp, I declare that my firstborn son shall no longer be called Eagle Huntington (too close to Falcon) but he will be named Raptor. Why Raptor? Well for a number of reasons, but mainly b/c it sounds AWESOME and a Raptor is way more badass than a Falcon. Raptor Huntington.... nice.

Finally here are my predictions for the big sports weekend:
KU 36 Col 17.
Chiefs 2 Redskins 99
Bears 31 Falcons 0

Gordian Knot - what the .....?

So, I've heard the term "Gordian Knot" thrown around the office quite a bit in the last few weeks. In the meetings everyone around me seems to know what a Gordian Knot is, as they laugh, nod, acknowledge, etc. I on the other hand have no clue what a Gordian Knot is, or what it is a metaphor for. So I turned to good ole' wikipedia for the answer. Turns out the story is kind of cool and, like many fables, we can learn something from it too. Yeah!

Long story short, a long time ago, when Alexander the Great was conquering all of Asia he came across a Persian province called Phrygia. In Phrygia a former peasant, turned king, had his old ox-cart tied to a post in the palace. Legend said that whoever could untie the knot would go on to be the King of Asia. The knot looked something like this:

Where does it start? Where does it end? The madness! Alexander, being a much smarter man than I, had a simple solution to this impossibly complex knot.

So what was Alexanders solution? He took one look at that knot and just chopped it in half with his sword. Knot was "untied", crown the man already.

So what can we commoners take from this story? Well I see a few conclusions we can make. One, no problem is too complex to be solved. Two, sometimes the simplest solution will be the quickest and most effective. Three, the greatest leaders are not afraid to resort to force to solve a problem. And finally, don't make a prophecy that says your future king will be able to untie a knot unless you WANT to be taken over rather quickly.

All that being said, I'm taking a page from Alex and going to go bash my Rubik's cube against a stone wall.

The blog is open!

Hello world!

My name is Brian Huntington. I am somewhat new to the blogosphere. Some of you may remember the ill-conceived, HuntingtonPerspective. Due to creative differences between me and my brother, I have decided to go it alone. Regardless, I have been thinking about starting a blog, journal, diary, whatever for a while now.

This not a blog to come to if you are looking for silly thoughts or observations. I assure you, my intentions for this blog are completely noble. I realized that nearly every great man in history kept a journal. Think about it. Can you think of any biography you have ever read that does not reference the subjects personal journal or diary? I can't either. Every President, CEO, Revolutionary, or Hero seems to have kept one.

Since a Moleskin is expensive, and I am cheap, I am going to attempt to keep a journal in blog form. You can either read my thoughts, experiences, feelings and such now, or you can wait for the biography in 2045, it makes no difference to me.

All that being said, I look forward to the success of the blog and the success of our country!
